Shahi Chadar — The Royal Cloth of Devotion
Cloth of Respect, Covering the Tomb
The Shahi Chadar (royal cloth or Gilaaf) is a sacred ceremonial cloth draped over the tomb of Khwaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti (R.A.) as an act of reverence and spiritual homage. This centuries-old tradition symbolizes devotion, protection, and respect and remains one of the most visible and cherished offerings at Ajmer Sharif .
Historical Significance
The practice of Chadar Poshi dates back over 800 years to the reign of Sultan Iltutmish (1211–1236) , who sent ceremonial cloths to honor the saint.
Over the centuries, rulers, dignitaries, and devotees alike have continued this custom, including modern political and spiritual figures, highlighting the enduring symbolic and spiritual importance of the Shahi Chadar.
It is traditionally offered as Nazrana-e-Aqidat (a token of devotion), often in fulfillment of a Mannat (vow) or as a gesture of gratitude.
Design & Symbolism
A typical Shahi Chadar measures around 42 meters , enveloping the entire shrine.
Made of luxurious fabrics , it features intricate embroidery using pearl and silver threads , along with handwritten verses such as Yaseen Sharif, and motifs depicting Makkah, Madinah, Panjetan Paak, and the Dargah itself.
The grandeur of the Shahi Chadar allows devotees of all means to participate: smaller chadars may be offered individually, repurposed when no longer sufficient to cover the shrine, or distributed to other saintly graves across regions.
Ritual & Devotional Practice
Chadars are placed by khadims or shrine staff during scheduled ceremonies, accompanied by recitations and blessings .
Families and communities often present the Shahi Chadar to mark anniversaries, fulfill Mannats, or express gratitude .
Once a Shahi Chadar is worn out, it is respectfully retired and stored in the shrine archive, with donors commemorated in special prayers.
